Memories and Reveries / Memórias e Devaneios
Memories and Reveries / Memórias e Devaneios explores a series of Rodrigo Hill’s place experiences in his home country Brasil, comprising a collection of photographic imaginaries, memories and reveries. The installation has 18 framed photographs covering personal archival imagery produced throughout the last 20 years, marking temporal points that preceded or at times ran in parallel with Rodrigo’s migration experiences to and in Aotearoa. The images follow a flux of representational modes underpinned by the artist’s psychological responses and ways of place-making that succeed or struggled. The work explores the intersection of photography with notions of memory and diaspora as catalysers for the development of a lens-based model of representation connected to affect, cultural perception and nostalgia. The project draws from family photographs, snapshots and archival imagery re-worked through installation sequencing, printing, cropping and picture framing strategies.
