Entanglements in the Anthropocene

Rodrigo Hill / Karen Barbour

Entanglements in the Anthropocene explores the intersection of place, dance and photography. The first photographs in this series were initially created in 2022 and led to a shared curiosity about aesthetics in the Anthropocene and how to express entangled relationships with place. Each photograph only comes into being after a quiet process of attunement to and conscious engagement with the material agencies of place. this body of work includes deep explorations of place-based experiences, memories and affect, and play with elemental motifs, the passage of time and embodies experiences of climate change. The work collaboratively emerged during place visits in the Waikato and Te Rohe Pōtae over the last years and is ongoing.
